For my birthday in June, hubby got all DIY and made me a Tortilla Press! I could hear him working away in the shed and had no idea what he was up to. What a lovely surprise!
It’s so much fun to use and makes the usual rolling out bit so much quicker. Rather than having to roll out each piece of dough, you simply put a dough ball in the press, lower the ‘squasher’ and then push down on the handle. 1 second later you have a lovely flat piece of dough ready for frying. If you’ve never tried fresh tortillas, they’re worth the effort… so soft and warm and full of flavour… must be the butter!
I’ve been using this awesome recipe for flour tortillas by Emily from Fuss Free Cooking, but would love to give some corn ones a go. Guess I need to make a trip to the nearest Latino food store.
Hubby made up the plans for the press using a few different sources, but here are some links to similar DIY versions if you want to make your own:

A few years ago my husband bought me a tortilla press from Mexico at a local Mexican Food place. It is the most amazing device ever! He also bought me a cast iron skillet at the same time, and that’s what I use to cook my tortillas, as it requires no oil/butter in the pan, and provides wonderfully even heat.
I’m greatly amused by the fact this post showed up this evening, when we had homemade tortillas for dinner this evening!

How fantastic. My Master 7 loves soft tacos, I’m more partial to burritos. Yum!!
