What a fun guest post! I thought you had stamped the drummers but doing a transfer is a fun technique too! Love how you incorporated the 12 drummers since you were the 12th post of the series. I love Christmas traditions! When I had 2 kids the oldest put the 1st ornament on the tree and the youngest put on the tree topper. We make a gingerbread house every year and cut out Christmas cookies.,Christmas eve dinnerid always the same. I buy a 1000 piece Christmas themed puzzle the first of December that we work on all month and try to finish by Christmas. I also have Kids Chritmas books that I bring out at Christmas time and a new one is added each year. Traditions are very fun and my kids enjoy and anticipate them each year as much as I do.

I love your Christmas traditions Gina! Especially the jigsaw puzzle…what a fun idea!

Thanks for a great pattern! I found it easy to follow as an occasional knitter and the answers to the questions I had, I found answered through comments before mine.

I am trying to knit these booties for a newborn … Is it possible to make a pattern like this for a newborn??
abby @ thingsforboys says
I’m not sure how well they’d stay on a newborns feet, but if you use thinner yarn and smaller needles you would be able to make them up in a smaller size. I would follow the directions for the smallest size, but knit the cuff piece about 4 1/2″

I love the look of these booties, but would be interested in what gauge you have that gave the sizes you list. Gauge is always my biggest problem with getting anything to fit.
abby @ thingsforboys says
Laurie, my gauge was about 5 – 6 stitches/inch. HTH!
Laurie says
Thank you.
Laurie says
I’m glad I asked….I need a size 1 needle to get that gauge. This is why my grandma ended up wearing the last pair of booties I knit!
abby @ thingsforboys says
wow! You must have some interesting knitting technique 🙂
laura says
Love the look of these booties but this is one of the most confusing patterns I have ever come across. I am halfway thru the 1st bootie and I have added notes all throughout the pattern.
When I am done, I anticipate posting a revised pattern on the project page, on Ravelry.
As a suggestion, if you were to go bac thru and edit this pattern so it is easier, I think people would be willing to pay for it, versus a very confusing free version.
Thank you for the inspiration!
abby @ thingsforboys says
Hi Laura,
So sorry to hear you have found the pattern confusing. I will admit it’s a bit more challenging than a regular bootie, but that is because it is knit up in one piece. My aim was to remove any unnecessary seaming and weaving in of yarn ends…I hate weaving in!
I’d love to know what parts you find confusing and how you feel it can be improved!
karen says
I’ve had the same trouble started and frogged it about 10 times, tried to see if anyone else had some words of wisdom but couldn’t really find anything… finally gave up.. thought i’d pull the yarn back out and try again.. this is a year later.. it’s still just as confusing, i’m not new to knitting but this pattern is confusing.
abby @ thingsforboys says
Hi Karen, Sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble. Please let me know what you’re stuck on and I’ll do my best to help.

I knitted up a pair of these for myself in one evening using thicker yarn and bigger needles. I did not find the pattern confusing, and had no trouble whatsoever understanding and following it. For those of you just learning to knit, take it slowly and go step by step. If you run into something you don’t understand, look it up in a book if you have one (that’s how I learned) or online. Don’t get frustrated and don’t quit! This pattern is a good learning opportunity–it’s simple enough but incorporates some interesting techniques.
As far as difficulty downloading the pattern, I copied and pasted it onto Notepad and printed it out from there. I also pasted a copy to an email and sent it to myself so I could just pull it up on my tablet and work from there.
Thanks for posting this. I now have some nice wool slippers to wear in my freezing house. By the way, I had some baby weight wool lying around, so I knitted a couple of these up on small needles, filled them with catnip, and sewed the tops closed. My cats went berserk over them!
Thanks for sharing this very cute pattern.
abby @ thingsforboys says
Great advice Sam! I’d love to know what size yarn and needles you used for an adult sized pair…I could do with new slippers!

I have not knitted for a long time, but just wanted to thank you so much for providing the instructions on how to knit these. With a little perseverance and googling the bits I did not know how to do (M1 and Kitchener Stitch) I made a perfectly adequate pair of bootees that I gave to my friend for her baby shower and she loved them! Thank you and I will definitely be checking you out on Facebook. Thanks again!

Ok so this is my first time knitting booties and I am in a personal battle with this bootie right now! So I just finished my five rows of stocking stitch and I am trying to start the instep. When I knit 20 and turn to purl 10 should I move the ten extra stitches on the right and left to stitch holders or just leave them be. and also when I finish the 13 rows for the instep should I bind off and then move on to knit the side or move it a stitch holder or do I need 3 needles to complete this project? Help please!
abby @ thingsforboys says
Hi Victoria,
Yes, you can put the ten stitches on either side onto stitch holders if that helps you. I personally find it easier to just leave them on the needles and ignore. When you finish the 13 rows, do not bind off. Again, you can put them onto a stitch holder if you like. You will be picking them up again when you turn around and come back on the next row. You do not need 3 needles for this part of the project (only for the bind off). Stitch holders can make it easier to work the rows as it can be a little tight knitting once you’ve worked all the way around the instep, but I tend to drop stitches when I used holders, so I work without them. It’s personal preference.Hope that helps! Abby

Hello! I have been really enjoying making these little booties…but I’ve hit a bit of a wall. I have been using the ‘wrap and turn’ method for knitting the 13 rows on the instep, but I’m getting confused when it comes to ‘picking up the wraps’. have been trying to follow youtube videos but getting stuck. Do you pick up the wraps once all the 13 rows have been knitted, or as you go along? I was originally leaving them, but that seemed to create a collection of wraps at each side. Id be really grateful for any help as im new to wrap and turns! Thanks, Charlotte
Charlotte Anstis says
Hello! I really love these booties, and have been enjoying knitting them, but I’ve hit a wall. I’ve been doing the ‘wrap and turn’ technique for the 13 short rows, but I’m really confused about when to pick up the wraps….if at all. I’m new to the wrap and turn and have been watching youtube vids but still confused. Do you pick up the wraps at each row (if so….how?) or do it all after picking up the 7 stitches (they seem to all bulk up if I leave them till completing the 13 rows) …I hope this makes sense! Thanks
Charlotte Anstis says
Please ignore previous post of mine…I realise I was over complicating with the whole ‘wrap and turn’ stuff, am back on track 🙂
abby @ thingsforboys says
Glad you sorted it out Charlotte. As you must have realised, there’s no need to wrap when you turn.

I am new in knitting, plus Spanish is my main language, so the instruccions are not easy for me, but I wanted to try these cute uggs for my grandchid.I had to read the instructions several times, I was about to give up, but then thought; “I try finishing one, if it works, I will knitt the other one, if not, at least I tried. Well, besides the grafting at the very end, everything worked great, not so easy, but I was happy with the results. Now I am ready to knitt a brand new pair for my little angel.
abby @ thingsforboys says
so glad you were able to figure out the pattern Sheila! Happy knitting!

I am having a difficult time following this pattern. I am an experienced knitter but struggling with this pattern. Seems to lack details and needs more illustrations (step by step). Please consider improving illustration. Thanks!
abby @ thingsforboys says
Sorry to hear you’re having trouble.
I would love to make a video or do a knit along with more detailed photos, but I just don’t have the time. I’ve been wanting to do the knit along for at least 6 months. If you want to come and babysit my boys for 12 hours so I can put it together, that would be great! lol
Can you tell me where you’re getting stuck and I’ll see if I can help?
