I was recently contacted by Spotlight and asked to review the Wilton Gingerbread House Kit for them. Gingerbread houses look like so much fun, but seem like a lot of effort. And I’m always worried that I won’t make the gingerbread pieces thick or strong enough and it’ll collapse. This kit takes all the stress out of it and makes for a fun family activity!
Keep reading because I have 2 kits to giveaway!
The kit comes with all the gingerbread pieces needed to make the house, a huge bag of icing (I think I used half of it), 3 lots of lollies for decorating and a piping bag and tip. It also has very thorough instructions on how to assemble the house and 3 decorating options or you can decorate it however you like. Roman and I went the DIY version.
I put the house together one afternoon and we decorated it the next day. The instructions suggest trimming the piece to square them up. Mine were pretty good so I left them alone. The instructions also say there is a piece of cardboard to use for the base, but I couldn’t figure out which piece they meant so I built mine directly on a plate.
The icing is a great consistency. Soft enough to pipe nicely and also hard enough to hold the lollies in place. I didn’t seal the icing bag or the piping bag between constructing and decorating and after taking the dried piece of icing out that had been in the air, the rest of the icing was fine.
Roman was so excited when it arrived and asked every 5 minutes when we could decorate it. I had control of the piping bag and he told me where to pipe the icing. He had the job of eating the lollies sticking the lollies on. Please note that the little tree and snowman in the pictures are not from the kit, they are my own Christmas themed nesting dolls.
The Gingerbread smells great and I can’t wait to eat it! Overall I was really impressed with the kit. It was easy to put together, pretty foolproof really. Roman had a great time decorating it and it looks really good. Decorating the gingerbread house was a fun activity for the afternoon. The kit retails for $19.99 and is available a Spotlight stores nationally.
I’m looking forward to making another one next year. In fact, I think this might become a bit of a family tradition.

I love that idea!

My favourite tradition is putting up the tree with the children. It’s the time that I leave my perfection tendencies aside and just let them have fun. I love seeing all the little handmade ornaments and memories with each and every one.
abby says
I can’t wait to get my first kid-made ornament!
Ms Midge says
My favourite tradition is meeting up with our best friends and their kids on Xmas eve, and all eating takeaway then sitting down to watch the Carols! In years gone past, whilst the carols were on, the dads would go out and assemble whichever equipment santa was bringing!
abby says
Roman is excited to watch the carols this year, which I’m excited about! Santa elves get no rest, hey 😉
Carlie L says
As a child it was going to my grandparents and finding the treasure (loose change) my pa hid around the garden, my nans streamed pudding (with coins hidden in it!) and all the family& food every year at Christmas. Now my own kids are getting old enough to understand it’s leaving snacks out for Santa, putting up the tree& decorating the house.
abby says
such great memories

Every year my mum makes my family a Christmas cake. But we are only allowed to cut & start eating on Christmas Eve. I then have an extra piece when I’m wrapping last minute presents. Oh & Santa gets left a piece too.

The tradition is making plum pudding in the cloth. It is the desert for Christmas Day. As it is made, each person has a stir of the mixture.
abby says
such a lovely tradition Helen!
Helen W says
I can remember helping my grandmother and mother. Now it is my turn! My mother judges it each year just like my grandmother did. From what they say, the recipe and plum pudding making has been going for generations before them.
Kathy Shalless says
Mum always makes jelly for the kids, big and small kids and has chocolates. Everyone looks forward to Christmas at Nan’s
Tashana purkis says
Every year we sit down and watch Christmas movies and have a hot chocolate before bed while we sit in our pjs and laugh at the movie
abby says
I love that idea, though I think they’d have to be iced chocolates most of the time!
Kerri says
I love watching all of the random Christmas movies and Christmas episodes of TV shows during the week leading up to Christmas. It makes it real with our own tree blinking in corner of the room.
abby says
me too! I feel like there aren’t as many on as there used to be.
Naomi says
Our favorite tradition is our elf on the shelf. This is his 3rd Christmas with us and we love the funny things he gets up to. He left us a cardboard on sticker gingerbread house to decorate that came from spotlight, a real one would be so much more impressive!
abby says
I love Elf of the Shelf, but I’m probably too lazy/forgetful for it 😉
Rebecca says
Eating anything you want – which for me means trifle for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I even still use the crystal bowl that my Nanna used to dish up trifle in.
abby says
haha! You and my hubby would get along well. Or not at all as you fight to the death for the trifle.
Rebecca says
Christmas was always the one day of the year when we were allowed to eat whatever we wanted – that is how much I love my trifle. Not sure if the sherry mum used to add helped 😉
Yvonne Vardon says
our one big Christmas tradition as a family is caring, sharing, love, laughter, noise and memories. Sounds corny, but we care about each other, we share what we have (I cannot remember a Christmas either as a child or married that hasn’t included other people, be it family, friends or at times strangers who needed to be included). We love, we laugh, we are so, so noisy and I hope and pray my family have long lasting, happy memories of Christmas’ past and in the future. (and I must admit some delicious food, preferably cooked by someone else – the odd glass or two of pleasant drink and gifts of chocolate really hit the spot too!!)
abby says
that’s lovely Yvonne!
Susan says
I like going to see the Gingerbread Houses from the competition at the Grove Park Inn in my hometown.
abby says
that sounds like great fun!
Carmel Day says

abby says

Helen says
My favourite Christmas tradition is making Christmas chocolate Santas and Christmas trees with the kids.

Each Christmas my mother, daughter and I bake my grandmother oatmeal walnut cookies.
